Ringley Stocks

Old picture of Ringley Stocks

The history and the exact date of the construction of the Stocks at Ringley Bridge is not clear. It was resolved in 1815 by a town's meeting " That the stocks shall be removed from Ringley Bridge to Halshaw Moor, opposite Thomas Bridle's ground. " Almost 200 years later the stocks are still located at Ringley Bridge. Presumably the relocation never occurred.

To mark the new Millennium, Stoneclough Women's Institute decided that it would be a good gesture to the community to give the stocks a face lift. After many months of discussion of what could be done to the stocks, which are a protected ancient monument, work is now well in hand and should be completed later this summer. The work is being carried out under the supervision of Shirley Harris, who is Bolton Metro's Conservation Officer.
