The first 2.56 miles from
the river locks to Park House Bridge Road is the most filled
and built over section of the canal. Apart from a small section
at Oldfield Road the canal has passed into other ownerships.
From the river to the railway
viaduct the construction of the Manchester Inner Relief Road
will require that the existing locks
1 & 2 are modified
to accommodate the levels of the new road. The road construction
will be finished in June 2002 and as part of the scheme £300,000
of preliminary works have been added to the contract to construct
a roof slab over the line of the locks.
From the Railway Viaduct to the crossing of the
railway at Oldfield
Road plans have been approved by City of Salford for the construction
of a housing, retail and ski-slope
development to be
built on the line of the canal. This has undergone several revisions
and it is hoped that the canal can be totally integrated into
the scheme.
The turning area just after
the railway crossing has been built over and locks 4 &
5 are buried under
Oldfield Road. A new structure will be needed to accommodate
the locks and Oldfield Road.
The section from Oldfield
Road to lock
6 is buried under
several metres of building material.
The filled canal follows the
line of the railway to Windsor
Bridge where the new
Windsor Bridge and slip road have been constructed on the line
of the canal. The round-about opposite Salford Crescent Railway
Station marks the exact centre line of the canal. Major work
will be need in this area to maintain vehicular access to the
A6.
From Windsor Bridge to Frederick
Road the canal has been filled and sections are used for car
parking, in addition a large electrical
sub-station has been
built on the line of the canal.
A new road bridge will be
needed for the crossing of Frederick Road. A new building has recently been built on the line
of the canal at Frederick Road.
The section from Frederick
Road to Broughton Road is filled and part is used as a car parking
area. A new
road bridge will be
required for the crossing of Broughton Road.
From Broughton Road to Cock
Robin Bridge the canal
has been filled and part covered with a hard standing for use
as a builders yard.
The largest section of .69 mile, from Cock Robin Bridge
to Park
House Bridge, is owned
by Tarmac Quarry Products Ltd and is used for the production
of asphalt and concrete products. A new bridge will be required
to carry the canal under Park House Bridge Road. |
