The dry section from Clifton Aqueduct to the Horse Shoe Inn is in the ownership of United Utilities. The land was acquired by Bolton Council in 1947 to provide improved access by road to Rhodes farm.

From Clifton Aqueduct to the M60 Motorway a large sludge lagoon has been constructed over the line of the canal. The M60 Motorway crosses the line of the canal at the 5 mile point. Major works will be needed to pass beneath this major Motorway.

On the other side of the Motorway a further sludge lagoon stretches almost to Rhodes Lock.

From Rhodes Lock to Kilcoby Bridge the canal has been filled with screenings from Ringley Fold treatment works. Kilcoby Bridge was demolished many years ago and an access road constructed over the line of the old bridge to carry sludge tankers and heavy plant to Rhodes Farm water treatment site.

A sewer and sludge line runs in the filled section from Kilcoby Bridge to Giants Seat Locks.

The section from Giants Seat Locks to the Horse Shoe Inn was filled during the constuction of the treatment works which opened in 1965. Originally the access road to the new works was to be built over the the line of the canal.

From the Horse Shoe Inn to Ringley Locks the canal was filled by Fletchers Paper mill with a variety of waste products.
