The 1936 Breach.

On the 6th July 1936 millions of gallons of water poured into the River Irwell. The breach was never repaired and resulted in the section from Clifton to Ladyshore together with the section from Nob End to Bolton being abandoned in 1941.

You can just make out the missing wall on the right of the picture.

Viewed from across the river this is engineering on a grand scale. A secondary collapse of the masonry wall can be seen on the right of the picture.
