The M 60 Motorway is in the background with the new eastern sludge lagoon on the right of the photograph. The trees and wire fence mark the boundary of the canal.

The M 60 Motorway ( M 62 ) was built in the 1970s and crossed the canal at the 5 mile post. With the construction of the motorway part of the existing sludge lagoon was lost. To compensate for the lost area of lagoon a new lagoon was constructed on the eastern site of the motorway destroying a further section of the canal.
