The new Inner Relief Road opened to traffic on 19th July, 2002 and takes up much of the land from the river to the railway viaduct.
.

The new road crosses the line of the old Locks 1 & 2

.

Locks 1 & 2 were filled in 1969 as part of a general filling operation from the river to beyond Windsor Bridge. £300,000 advanced works were added to the Inner Relief Road scheme to maintain the existing route to the river. Levels are such that it is not possible to keep the existing lock configuration. The Locks will have to be re-sited as part of the wider restoration scheme.

Surplus material from locks 1 & 2 has been deposited 3 miles upstream at Agecroft Wharf. It is not clear if this qualifies as an Irwell Valley Sculpture Trail exhibit or Salford's "Lock Henge"
