Access from The Crescent

The old bridge was built to carry The Crescent over the Manchester-Bolton railway which was completed in 1838 and the canal which was completed in 1796 but little used from the 1930's onwards.

The new bridge was built in 1982 and spans the railway and two slip roads. One slip road allows traffic to join Albion Way and so ease connection with the M602 extension which was opened in 1982. The other slip road, which is built on the line of the canal, provides access to the University of Salford and the new Salford Crescent railway station.

The new bridge also provided the additional width necessary for the construction of the 'Windsor Link' rail scheme which improved the service from Manchester Piccadilly station towards the North West. A view from the new Windsor Bridge looking towards Oldfield Road shows the old boundary wall which separated the canal from the railway. Parts of the canal towing path are still visible in the area of Christchurch car park.
