In 1868 the Borough Fire Brigade
had become the responsibility of the police and was staffed by
15 Fire Policemen who had two manual fire-engines. The first
steam horse-drawn pump was acquired in 1875. In addition carts
carrying fire hoses were provided at seven local police stations.
Superintendent Bentley was appointed as the first Chief Fire
Officer in 1898.
The Crecsent Fire Station
was built in 1902 and opened the following year. The station
replaced an earlier one at Ford Street. It was designed so that
horse drawn appliances could enter from the rear, and thus be
facing the front ready for action. the first motor-driven appliances
arrived in 1910 and in the same year 36 Gamewell fire alarm boxes
were installed at various locations in the city. Accommodation
for the firemen was provided in a small square development of
houses at the rear of the station. The square was also used by
the firemen to carry out practice drill. Salford Fire Brigade
joined the Greater Manchester Fire Service in 1974.
The station now houses the
Viewpoint Gallery which displays photographic exhibitions. Occasionally
the gallery puts on other specialist shows and exhibitions.
